Dewalt Screwdriver Review

We’ve talked loads of times on the Toolstop blog about power tool innovation. Typically this falls into the categories of battery technology and the increased move to brushless motors.

This time, though, DeWALT has pushed the boat out once again with the launch of the DeWALT DCF680G2 motion-activated screwdriver.

However, is it a legitimate move forward in power tool technology or fun gimmick? Keep reading to find out!

Dewalt DCF680G2 Features and Benefits

The Dewalt DCF680G2 features a variable speed gyroscopic controlled motor. Most of us have some experience with gyroscopic technology, particularly if we own a modern smart phone. But it’s likely this will be a new experience in a power tool.

How does it work? Very simply, as it turns out.

Want to drive a screw? Turn your wrist to the right.
Want to loosen a screw? Turn your wrist to the left.

The further you turn your wrist in either direction the faster the bit turns. That’s it. DeWALT claims this offers you greater versatility and control. What do you think?

We break down the features of the DCF680G2 below:

  • Powerful 7.2V Screwdriver for screwdriving applications
  • Gyroscopic operation coupled with variable speed up to 430rpm allows for the greatest levels of control
  • Twin LEDs offer great work piece illumination
  • State of charge gauge offers user peace of mind that there is plenty of charge left in the battery to complete the job
  • 16 torque settings
  • New 7.2V 1.0Ah li-ion battery platform
  • Ideal for lightweight applications

So, how does this motion activated operation of the DCF680G2 actually work in practice?

We got our hands on the DCF680G2 and Neil shares his thoughts on Toolstop TV:

Another interesting benefit of the DCF680G2 is the ability to choose your own ergonomics via the 2 position pivoting handle.

As Neil demostrated in the video, simply press the button on the body of the screwdriver and rotate the handle from a straight grip to a pistol grip. The gyroscopic operation, coupled with the ability to choose your own grip position, means you’ve got incredible control over the speed of the motor as you rotate your wrist. Add to that the 16 position clutch ring, ensuring your accurate with your depth control, vital when handling small screws, such as found in a computer motherboard.

DeWALT may not be the first power tool company to launch a motion-controlled screwdriver, but it’s certainly an interesting move from a company renowned for the quality and innovation they consistently build into their professional tools.

So, what’re your thoughts on the DeWALT DCF680G2 motion controlled screwdriver? We want to hear from you!
