What's the difference between TStak and ToughSystem?

Tool boxes are an essential piece of your kit. Whether you use them to keep your tools safe when not in use, or to transport your tools across the job, everyone needs one.

Dewalt is a leading manufacturer of power tools and accessories, and their tool storage systems are no exception. ToughSystem and TStak are two of their most popular options, but which one is right for you?

In this Toolstop guide, we will compare the two bestselling kit boxes from Dewalt.

What is Dewalt ToughSystem?

ToughSystem is DeWalt's most rugged tool storage system. It's made from high-density polyethylene, which is incredibly durable and resistant to impact, weather, and chemicals. ToughSystem storage modules are also watertight and dustproof, so your tools will stay protected no matter where you take them.

Its modular design allows you to create a storage solution that's perfectly tailored to your needs. You can stack boxes, add drawers, and even attach wheels for easy transport. Also available is a variety of accessories, including organisers, and trays.

What is Dewalt TStak?

TStak is a more lightweight and affordable alternative to ToughSystem. It's made from high-impact ABS plastic, which is still very durable, but not quite as tough as the ToughSystem's polyethylene. TStak is also not watertight or dustproof, but same as ToughSystem, you can stack boxes, add drawers, attach wheels and customise it with a variety of accessories.

A few years ago, Dewalt announced the launch of their new TStak and ToughSystem 2.0 Tool Boxes, but what is the difference between the two and how do they stack up against the originals?

TStak Vs TStak 2.0

Original TStak TStak 2.0
  • Capacity load: 30kg
  • Plastic modular stacking latches
  • Lockable
  • 2.5mm Polypropylene body
  • Metal hinges
  • Metal latches
  • Capacity Load: 30kg

  • 2.5mm Polypropylene body
  • Metal hinges
  • Heavy duty metal latches
  • IP54 water and dust seal
  • Backwards compatible with original TStak
  • Tracker ready - pair with your Dewalt Tool Box app so you always know where your tool box is

Let's compare the two...

Original TStak

  • Capacity load: 30Kg
  • Plastic modular stacking latches

TStak 2.0

  • Metal hinges
  • Heavy duty metal latches
  • IP54 water and dust seal
  • Backwards compatible with original TStak
  • Tracker ready - pair with your Dewalt Tool Box app so you always know where your tool box is

TStak 2.0 is made from the same high-impact ABS plastic as the original TStak, but it has been reinforced with metal inserts at key stress points. This makes TStak 2.0 more durable and resistant to damage.

The original TStak is not watertight or dustproof, whereas the 2.0 version has an IP54 rating, which means it is protected against water jets from any direction and dust. This makes TStak 2.0 a better choice for use in wet or dusty environments.

Orignal TStak modules and the newer TStak 2.0 modules are compatible with eachother. So if you decide to upgrade, all newer kit boxes will be backwards compatible with your originals.

ToughSystem Vs ToughSystem 2.0

ToughSystem is like TStak's older brother. Its tough outer body can withstand drops of up to 3 feet, making it the ideal solution for working on and around job sites. The metal hinges and latches have been sprayed for 24 hours straight with a water/salt solution with no reported corrosion damage, and their IP65 rating makes them almost fully waterproof. Your tools and accessories will be fully protected from the elements with ToughSystem 2.0.

Orignal ToughSystem modules and the newer ToughSystem 2.0 modules are compatible with eachother. So if you decide to upgrade, all newer kit boxes will be backwards compatible with your originals.

Both the original ToughSystem and ToughSystem 2.0 are made from high-density polyethylene, which is a very durable material. However, ToughSystem 2.0 has been reinforced with metal inserts at key stress points, which makes it even more durable. The original ToughSystem has an IP54 rating, which means it is protected against water jets from any direction and dust. However, ToughSystem 2.0 has an IP65 rating, which means it is also protected against low-pressure jets of water from all directions and powerful jets of water from specific directions. This makes ToughSystem 2.0 a better choice for use in wet or dusty environments. The outer casing is also now slightly thinner on the new model, which gives you a 20% larger storage capacity and it is tracker ready, meaning you can pair it with your Dewalt Tool Box app so you never lose it again.

What is the best tool box?

Depending on your trade, and what you are going to use your tool box for, will depend which one you should go for.

If you are going to be working outside in all weather conditions and seasons, on rugged uneven surfaces and overall the environment is a bit hash bash, ToughSystem is your best bet.

It can well and truly live up to the task. But bear in mind that ToughSystem toolboxes are slightly more expensive due to their impressive features.

If you are going to be working mainly indoors, or in dry weather and aren't too hash bash with your tools, TStak will do the job just as well. Afterall, these boxes are fully lockable with an extremely durable outer body and large 30kg load capacity.

Both TStak and ToughSystem 2.0 are fully backwards compatible, meaning you can buy the 2.0 range, and it will still fit onto your older storage solutions.

*Please note, ToughSystem and TStak are not compatible with one another unless you buy Dewalt's new adaptor plate, the DWST08017-1.
